Mormon But Not LDS

Is it true that someone can call themselves "Mormon" but say they are not "LDS"?

There are many split groups that were created after Joseph Smith died. The majority went with Brigham Young and they're known as LDS, the rest formed their own groups and they call themselves Mormons as well but not part of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
